Rocinante: Propulsion

The Rocinante was the first paper model I ever heard of and tried building. The object is the ship from the Sci Fi series, The Expanse, and if you haven’t seen it, you should. It’s the best Sci Fi series I’ve seen in a long time.

You start off building the ship from the engine and let me tell you… some of the parts you’re working with are less than a millimetre when all folded and ready to glue onto the ship.

You start with a relatively substantial structure made of interlocking matte board. The plans spec 1 to 1.5 mm in thickness, and it really does make a difference. If you’re making one, be sure to know what thickness your structure paper is.

I couldn’t get either 1mm or 1.5mm , but instead ended up with something around 1.35mm, which was a pain because the lighter, paper wrapping the outside either had to be fudged or the structure cut down slightly. Next time I’ll be sure to have the correct thickness of paper recommended.

Here are the photos of the construction.

    • Thanks Karl. I didn’t know they’ve come out with a plastic model. There’s a great group on Facebook call “The Art of Modeling” that I belong to. Perhaps you should join and post pick. Cheers, Seaghan
