Saturn V : Introduction
After I finished the Rocinante, I was looking around for another model to build. I have a small, plastic model of the Saturn V from when it was actually in the news, but I always wanted something bigger… something that would be in a typical scale associated with aircraft. That means 1:72 or 1:48 or even 1:32.
Obviously there is a problem here. The Saturn V rocket is MASSIVE. 110.64 metres high would mean that a 1:32 model would be 3.4575 metres tall or about 11 feet… hmmm, taller than most room ceilings.
I considered building just the bottom stage and mounting it to the ceiling with flames and smoke as if it was going through the ceiling… Sandi didn’t think it was a good idea.
Then I came across the 1:48 scale paper model. That would be only 2.3 metres tall or about 7.5 feet. That could fit in my office. SOLD!
I downloaded the plans and started building a cross section of the stage one booster to have an idea of the circumference. It’s gonna be huge.
But, what took me so long go get started was finding 110lb paper. I couldn’t use the lighter paper I had used for the test… with the height of the model, it would crush the lower stages by the time I got to the top.
But now, I have secured a source and am ready to start.
